Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was thrown into the Merseyside derby at Everton after an injury to Giorgi Mamardashvili left the Reds down to their third-choice goalie.

With Alisson Becker already unavailable due to injury, Mamardashvili was stretchered off following a painful collision when Beto scored the equaliser for Everton.

Woodman, 29, joined Liverpool last summer on a free transfer from Preston North End. It was his first appearance for Liverpool in the Premier League, and only his second since making his Liverpool debut in the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace earlier this season.

A former England youth international, Woodman started his career with Newcastle United but made just nine appearances for the club, with loan spells at Hartlepool, Crawley, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Swansea and Bournemouth.

He joined Preston in 2022 and made 138 appearances for the club before joining Liverpool at the end of his contract last season. His father, Andy Woodman, is a former professional goalkeeper and was a coach at Arsenal, among other clubs.

Woodman is also the godson of former England manager Gareth Southgate, who former a close bond with Woodman’s father when they played together at Crystal Palace.

Earlier this season, Woodman explained why he made the decision to join Liverpool, even when first-team opportunities appeared limited. “I’ve played consistently over the last five or six years, albeit in the Championship and a few Premier League games,” he told the club’s website.

“I wanted to keep playing and I’m only 28, but there was a conversation in the summer where Liverpool came up. I had other options but my dad said to me, ‘How do you turn down Liverpool? You just can’t do it.’

“I’m very happy with my decision because l get to work with the best players in the world and I get to work up close with Ali and Giorgi, who are top goalkeepers who I think are only going to make me better and help my development.”
