President Donald Trump is doubling down on his feud with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Trump said the Italian leader “begged” him to take a picture together during this week’s Group of Seven summit in France, which prompted Meloni to post a social media video blasting his claim as “completely made up.” Now, Trump has hit out at Meloni again, this time in an interview with NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez.

“She was a big fan. But I don’t want her as a fan because she was not there — along with the NATO group — having to do with the Strait,” Trump said later on Friday, referencing the Strait of Hormuz.

The feud began after Trump claimed Meloni wanted to take a picture with him “so badly,” adding, “I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,” according to La7 TV, an Italian news channel. The remarks enraged Meloni, who lashed out at the president in a brief social media video on Friday morning.

She captioned the video: “Neither I nor Italy ever beg.”

“Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I am frankly astonished. I don’t know why the ‌president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies: it is not the first time, moreover,” Meloni said.

“I can only say it is disappointing that he does not show the same determination with the enemies of the West and of the United States, whose leaders he instead treats with far greater indulgence,” she added.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also condemned Trump and announced he’s canceling an upcoming trip to the U.S. over his comments.

“The serious and offensive words of President Trump towards Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni offend all of Italy. For this reason, I have decided to cancel my visit to the United States scheduled for the next 21 and 22 June,” he wrote on X.

Trump and Meloni’s relationship took a turn earlier this year, after she called his criticisms of Pope Leo XIV “unacceptable.” Soon afterward, Trump hit back in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera: “I thought she had courage, but I was wrong.”
