American tennis star Frances Tiafoe’s dramatic comeback win at the French Open briefly descended into chaos on Saturday when a heated dispute broke out on court.

During the fifth and final set of his clash with Portugal’s Jaime Faria, which ended after midnight in Paris, Tiafoe was heard ripping into his opponent after a controversial decision sparked an argument between the two players.

‘This has to stop,’ the female umpire told them before leaping down from her chair.

As she came down from her chair to try and defuse the situation, Tiafoe was heard telling Faria at the net: ‘Why don’t you quit trying to act like you’re tough? You’re not hard bro, just play.’

Faria then responded: ‘You’re being disrespectful.’

‘You were as well,’ the umpire told Faria. ‘So please…’

The Portuguese player was then heard telling the umpire at her chair that he ‘never said anything about him’ before finally returning to his side of the court.

The disagreement began when Tiafoe, leading 2-1 in the fifth set, claimed a serve from Faria was out, before Hawkeye confirmed it was actually one millimeter in. The pair then appeared to exchange insults, yet it is unclear what was initially said between them.

In the end, Tiafoe had the last laugh after completing a miraculous comeback to advance to the fourth round, having fallen two sets behind in the match.

After losing the opening two sets (6-4, 7-6), the 28-year-old won a crucial tiebreak in the third before running out a 6-1 winner in the fourth.

He then wrapped up a place in the fourth round by winning the deciding fifth set 6-2, setting up a battle with Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi on Monday.

Tiafoe is seeking his first appearance in a Grand Slam final, with his semifinal appearances at the 2022 and 2024 US Open his best efforts to date.

At the French Open, he had previously never made it past the second round.
