Aberdeen have become the first club in Scotland to secure a permanent licence for the sale of alcohol at selected home matches.

The ground-breaking new scheme will be in operation with immediate effect for Aberdeen’s first home match of the season against Hearts at Pittodrie next weekend.

After two trial runs last season, a permanent licence has now been granted by Aberdeen City Council permitting the sale of alcohol in the Richard Donald Stand Lower concourse area.

Drinks can be sold up to 30 minutes prior to kick-off, with feedback from fans on last season’s trial scheme said to be overwhelmingly positive.

However, the new policy will not apply to all home fixtures. Alcohol will not be sold at those matches which are identified as high-risk by Aberdeen and Police Scotland.

‘We are pleased to have secured a permanent alcohol licence for matchdays at Pittodrie,’ said Aberdeen chief executive Alan Burrows.

Supporters will now be able to enjoy a pre-match pint at Pittodrie on selected match-days

‘Supporter feedback has consistently highlighted the value of providing a more modern and flexible stadium experience.

‘We have worked closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the necessary safeguards and operating procedures are in place.

‘The club is grateful for the positive feedback from supporters about how previous alcohol licence trials had improved the matchday experience and we look forward to introducing this enhancement from our opening home league fixture against Hearts.’

The existing legislation around the ban on alcohol inside Scots stadiums, excluding hospitality areas, has been in place since 1980 following the Old Firm riots at Hampden.

Many critics have argued that it is out of date, whilst First Minister John Swinney has consistently said that there are no plans to change or review the laws.

But the controlled sale at certain matches is something which could now be further explored by other clubs across the SPFL.

A club statement from Aberdeen continued: ‘In addition to the introduction of the permanent alcohol licence, Aberdeen FC will continue to explore opportunities to enhance the matchday experience through a programme of entertainment and activations at selected fixtures throughout the season.

‘These initiatives will include live music, fan engagement activities and family-friendly entertainment designed to create an even more vibrant atmosphere around Pittodrie on matchdays.

‘Supporters will be provided with full details regarding the operation of alcohol sales, designated serving areas and stadium policies ahead of the Hearts fixture.

‘Alcohol would only be able to be consumed within clearly designated areas and not in sight of the pitch, and all activity will be confined to clearly designated and monitored areas. Regular matchday safety protocols remain unchanged, and alcohol will only be sold at lower risk non-Category CIR matches.

‘The club would like to thank all parties involved for the constructive approach taken in reaching this positive outcome.’

Meanwhile, former Scotland women’s captain Rachel Corsie has joined the Aberdeen board.

The Aberdonian, who won more than 150 international caps, is a qualified chartered accountant and began her professional career with Ernst & Young before becoming a full-time player with the likes of Utah Royals and Aston Villa.

The 36-year-old, who began her football career with Aberdeen before joining Glasgow City, said: ‘It is a genuine honour to join the board of Aberdeen. As someone who grew up supporting the club, this is an opportunity that means a great deal to me personally.

‘Football has given me experiences across the world, and I’ve been fortunate to see different approaches to leadership, culture and player development. I hope I can bring those experiences, together with my professional background to help the club continue moving forward.

‘I’m especially excited about the opportunity to support the continued development of the women’s and girls’ programme.’
