  • Williams has won 23 major titles

Tennis legend Serena Williams has stunned the sporting world by revealing she is not ruling out a return to the court.

The 23-time major champion last played a professional match at the 2022 US Open, where she was defeated by Aussie star Ajla Tomljanović in three sets.

But Williams has now explained to the USA’s Today show her professional career may not be over just yet.

The program’s host Savannah Guthrie pressed the sporting icon in an awkward back and forth on Thursday.

Midway through their chat, Guthrie noted Williams had re-entered the sport’s drug testing pool in October 2025.

Guthrie said she ‘had to ask’ whether Williams will go back to playing professionally.

The 44-year-old was shocked.

‘Really? Are you asking me that on the Today show? Oh my gosh. Really?’ she asked.

‘Is that a no?’ Guthrie said.

‘I’m just having fun and enjoying my life right now,’ Williams replied.

‘That’s not a yes or a no. I don’t know. I’m just gonna see what happens.’

Her remarks come just days after former tennis champion turned media commentator Jim Courier made a similar claim about Williams’ future.

He stated the 23-time major winner joining the registered testing pool is a telling sign that she will play on the WTA tour again.

‘You have an app where you give one hour a day when you have to be there [for drug testing],’ Courier told Wide World of Sports.

‘No person without intentions to play professional tennis is going to put themselves on that list.’

Williams last won a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2018.

She is the most decorated female major champion in the open era.
