Scottie Scheffler publicly scolded his longtime caddie Ted Scott on Thursday after he made a costly mistake during the first round of the Memorial Tournament.

Scheffler, the world No 1, was level-par for the day going into the par-three 16 at the famous Muirfield in Ohio.

But, after discussions with Scott before his swing, he put his tee shot straight into the water to the left of the green.

Scheffler was furious and took his anger out on Scott, suggesting his caddie had told him the direction of the wind incorrectly.

As Scott began to walk 96 yards to the drop area with his palms upward, the two-time Masters champion unloaded on Scott in an uncomfortable scene.

He yelled at Scott: ‘I never thought that was in the water. I don’t know what to do.’

Scott seemingly tried to say something in response but Scheffler couldn’t hear him.

He continued: ‘I can’t hear a word you’re saying, dude. Now I’m in the water because it came in out of the right.

‘I absolutely flushed a seven iron and we get the wind wrong and I’m in the water. I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is. Like, that was a good shot. I flushed it.

‘I don’t understand what I’m meant to do. I don’t understand. I really don’t. There’s no way it could curve that much.

‘It’s so frustrating when we get this stuff wrong. I hit a good shot and I’m dropping from hazards. We cannot get the wind wrong.’

Scott started carrying Scheffler’s bag back in 2021 and the pair have gone on to forge one of the most successful pairings in golf.

They have won four majors, an Olympic gold medal and 19 PGA Tour events together with Scott raking in over $10million in prize money on the back of their success.

Scheffler is chasing a third-straight victory at the Memorial Tournament but a tough start has left him six shots behind a four-way share of the lead.

Wyndham Clark, coming off a victory in the Byron Nelson, US Open champion J.J. Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood and Ryan Gerard were each at five-under 67.
