Ruben Amorim has admitted he made mistakes as Manchester United’s head coach and apologised to fans for not acknowledging them since he was sacked in January.

Amorim said he was ‘proud’ to have been United boss for 14 months as he was officially unveiled as AC Milan’s new head coach on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old was widely criticised for refusing to be more flexible over his tactics at United, claiming that even the Pope couldn’t persuade him to change his system. It was a stance that ultimately led to his departure following an angry clash with director of football Jason Wilcox.

‘It’s hard to explain the mistakes as I would have to explain all the context of the last adventure,’ said Amorim during a half-hour press conference in which he spoke in English.

‘The only thing I can say is that I learn a lot and I did some mistakes. I didn’t have the opportunity – and I am sorry for that – to say something to the Manchester United fans but I’m really proud to have been their coach for a year.

‘Now it is a different history. There are a lot of things I could do better in the last experience. But sometimes it is like that. You need to learn to reach a different level. That is my thinking here.

‘Everyone learns from their experience. I learn a lot. I did some mistakes. I will try to change but there are some things you never change. I think I will be better. That’s all.’

Michael Carrick replaced Amorim in mid-January and turned United’s season around, leading the club to third place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification.

The two coaches will go head to head when United play their final pre-season game against Milan in Wroclaw, Poland on August 15.
