Newcastle are awaiting official contact from Arsenal over an improved offer on Bruno Guimaraes after the Brazilian made it clear he wants to leave the club.

As it stands, Newcastle say he is not for sale. The onus is on Arsenal to make a suitable offer that could change their stance.

Daily Mail Sport reported at the end of June that representatives in the UK have been gauging the market for the Brazil international.

Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his midfield ahead of the club’s title defence and they have identified Guimaraes, who has been on duty at the World Cup, as their main target.

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in 2022 and was made captain in 2024, has two years left to run on his contract but his club are now braced for another bid.

Newcastle have already lost Sandro Tonali, Guimaraes’ midfield partner, to Premier League rivals Tottenham, while Anthony Gordon has joined Barcelona.

Things have been slow in terms of incomings, with only forward Bazoumana Toure joining for £43million and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen arriving from Reims.

Losing their captain however would be a hammer blow to Eddie Howe’s side, who finished a lowly 12th in the Premier League last season.

Guimaraes, who missed a penalty as Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup by Norway in the last 16, has played 195 times for Newcastle since joining from Lille.

After the Magpies lost 2-0 to Fulham on the final day of the season, he wrote on social media: ‘A very frustrating season, and without a doubt we are all very disappointed.

‘You fans definitely did not deserve this.’

They may however now see their side launch a big rebuild if they are to kick on from last season.

Newcastle do, meanwhile, remain in talks for Johan Manzambi after Sean Steur arrived for his medical ahead of signing from Ajax for £22.6m.
