Cameras could be installed to fine school-run drivers breaking traffic restrictions outside Manchester schools.

Manchester City Council is planning to put automatic number plate recognition cameras outside seven designated “school streets” – roads outside schools – with restrictions for cars during drop-offs and pick-ups.

Brookburn Primary School, Manchester Communication Primary Academy, Manley Park Primary School, St Augustine’s C of E Primary School, St James’ C of E Primary School, St Paul’s C of E Primary School, and Our Lady’s RC Primary School are included in the plans.

The council said it believed the scheme would “stop inconsiderate parking” and encourage public transport use.

The change would also mean less pressure on school staff and volunteers, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Cameras would automatically check vehicles entering the street, dishing out fines to drivers caught breaking the rules.

Types of vehicles which could be allowed to use school streets include local residents and businesses, Blue Badge holders who need access, school vehicles, public buses, and emergency services, as well some temporary exemptions for situations such as carers or waste collection.

Manchester Council has launched a consultation on the plan, which closes on 6 September.
