England want to host Mexico at Wembley after their epic World Cup clash at the Azteca sparked a feeling of mutual respect and goodwill between the two nations.
Daily Mail Sport understands that the FA is actively exploring whether it would be feasible to welcome the tournament co-hosts to London at some point as part of what appears to be a blossoming relationship.
Despite an initial furore over a proposed change to the kick-off time of Sunday night’s instant classic, the Three Lions were left hugely impressed with the reception they were given both before and after their dramatic 3-2 last-16 clash in Mexico’s capital.
While a small group of locals attempted – unsuccessfully – to disrupt the team’s sleep outside their hotel on the eve of the game, Thomas Tuchel and his players have spoken very warmly of how they were treated in the country.
And it has been a similar story among the estimated 10,000 fans who travelled to the game. After 10-man England had managed to hang on, on what was a dramatic night, Mexico supporters behaved impeccably, congratulating their guests and wishing them luck for the rest of the tournament.
The experience has not been lost on officials at the FA, who will now seek to roll out the red carpet for the co-hosts should the calendar permit.
England hope to host Mexico in a friendly at Wembley soon after beating them in the World Cup
The Three Lions were left impressed with the reception they were given at the Azteca and want to reciprocate that by staging a match with the World Cup co-hosts at some point in the future
A relationship with Mexico may also come in handy when the Three Lions are preparing for future World Cups, when they may come face to face with nations from the same region.
Indeed, while any prospect is in the very early stages, there has been some consideration over whether a friendly between the two nations could become a regular occurrence.
After the victory Tuchel, who happily mixed with locals when he nipped out of the hotel for a coffee, spoke glowingly of the experience.
‘We played against a strong team in an amazing, amazing stadium and in an amazing country,’ he said.
‘I feel almost sorry to say that you (Mexico) are out, because I saw the passion and emotion of all the people.’
