Soccer fans across New York will be able to party late into the night during the World Cup after a major temporary overhaul of the state’s drinking laws was revealed.

The bill, passed on Tuesday, June 9, will give establishments across the entire state the green light to serve alcohol until 4 a.m. – matching the late-night closing times that are usually reserved exclusively for New York City.

Under the current State Liquor Authority rules, closing times vary wildly by region.

Counties like Ontario are restricted to a 1 a.m. cutoff, Niagara locked down at 2 a.m., and Warren forced to close shutters at 3 a.m.

The new legislation will instantly dismantle those regional curfews, allowing local pubs and sports bars to synchronize with the city from Thursday, June 11.

The bill officially expires on Tuesday, July 21.

Bars across the state of New York will be allowed to stay open until 4 a.m. during the World Cup

'From the first kick to the last whistle, bars and restaurants across our state can stay open throughout the tournament,' Governor of New York Kathy Hochul explained

In a statement, Governor of New York Kathy Hochul explained: ‘The World Cup is coming to New York and I want every New Yorker and local business to be part of the action and celebration, no ticket required.

‘From the first kick to the last whistle, bars and restaurants across our state can stay open throughout the tournament, bringing New Yorkers together to cheer on every goal and supporting small businesses across the state.’

Meanwhile, New York State Liquor Authority Chair Lily M. Fan added: ‘New York’s restaurants, bars, taverns and hospitality businesses will play an important role in welcoming fans from around the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‘This legislation gives local businesses a clear, temporary framework to serve visitors during this once-in-a-generation event’.

Back in April, Hochul revealed a new one-day permit process to allow bars and restaurants to host one-off outdoor events for World Cup screening parties.
