A man has been pulled from the rubble of a building by rescue teams eight days after devastating earthquakes struck Venezuela in a “miraculous” operation.

Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, 44, was buried under 29ft of debris from a collapsed shopping centre parking lot in La Guaira, the area worst hit when two earthquakes hit in quick succession last Wednesday.

His wife told CNN that she had experienced “days of great sorrow” and believed he was dead before he was freed on Thursday, after significant effort by local and international rescue teams.

“But once I found out that he was alive I saw a ray of sunshine,” she said. “He was holding up like a hero.”
