Liverpool are reportedly set to benefit financially after reaching an agreement which paves the way for their former boss Arne Slot to be named Netherlands manager.

Slot was sacked by Liverpool at the end of May, just one year after the Dutchman had led the Reds to the Premier League title.

His dismissal came after Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League at the end of a campaign where Slot oversaw 20 defeats in all competitions.

Slot also came under pressure from supporters and saw several key players – such as the now-departed Mohamed Salah – speak out about the playing style.

Liverpool have since appointed Andoni Iraola as Slot’s successor, while the Dutchman has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Ronald Koeman as Netherlands boss.

According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Slot’s potential appointment is moving closer with Liverpool open to contributing to his salary.

Liverpool could top up Arne Slot’s pay to help him become Netherlands boss, while reducing the compensation package due to their former boss

Slot would have been entitled to a significant compensation package from Liverpool after his dismissal, with clubs tending to place coaches on gardening leave following their sacking.

The report claims Liverpool are prepared to top up Slot’s salary in the first year with the national team, ensuring he is paid the full amount he was owed during the final year of his contract at Liverpool.

The agreement would ultimately lead to Liverpool paying out a smaller overall compensation package, while helping the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to appoint Slot.

It is claimed Slot would have been due around £6.9m in compensation from Liverpool.

Slot was sacked following a review into Liverpool’s troubled season that was led by Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards, chief executive of football at the club’s owner, Fenway Sports Group.

Edwards has since quit the club with the 47-year-old’s departure confirmed this week, one year before his contract had been due to end.

The KNVB have been looking for a new head coach following Koeman’s resignation after the Netherlands’ last-32 exit at the World Cup.

The Netherlands were beaten on penalties by Morocco after a 1-1 draw.

Koeman said he made the decision immediately after the Dutch’s early exit from the tournament in North America. It brought to an end his second spell in charge of the national team, a role he also held from 2018 to 2020.
