La Zambra, Andalucia, hotel review – UK Times

With its rock’n’roll past and laidback present, La Zambra balances spa serenity, excellent childcare and golden-hour glamour with surprising ease

Location

Tucked into the rolling hills of Andalucia just outside Mijas, La Zambra is removed from the typical Costa del Sol beach circuit. You’re surrounded by golf courses and open countryside rather than seafront promenades, making it a destination for switching off rather than purely a beach break.

From London, it’s an easy hop: direct flights from Heathrow Airport or Gatwick Airport to Malaga Airport take just under three hours. From there, the hotel is around a 25-minute drive. The hotel concierge can arrange a pick up for your arrival, or a hire a car for the duration of the stay.

If you prefer to use public transport, take a train or airport bus into central Malaga followed by a connection towards Fuengirola and then a taxi – though it’s not especially straightforward with luggage in tow.

There’s on-site parking available and the nearest beaches are around a 10-minute drive away.

The vibe

Bohemia meets barefoot luxury, with a subtle rock’n’roll undercurrent. It was once the legendary Byblos Hotel, which was a hedonistic playground of the Eighties and Nineties frequented by Mick Jagger and Julio Iglesias. Diana, Princess of Wales was said to have stayed here no fewer than three times, drawn to its seclusion among the fairways.

It has since has been reborn as a serene Mediterranean hideaway, thanks to the Unbound Collection by Hyatt.

Every detail has been designed to feel calming and inviting. A lavender-lined driveway sets the tone and leads into low-slung whitewashed buildings. Earthy textures, soft linens and rattan details create an atmosphere that’s both calming and quietly indulgent.

Despite the polish, the hotel never feels stiff. As evening falls, children spill out onto the lawns, darting between tables and doing cartwheels on the grass while parents linger over cocktails. La Zambra effortlessly strikes the balance between grown-up escape, golf tourism and family-friendly ease.

The service

Slick, intuitive and refreshingly unobtrusive. The multilingual staff seem to operate on a kind of sixth sense, appearing exactly when needed and fading into the background when not.

Whether it’s arranging a last-minute taxi into town, securing a dinner reservation or sourcing baby formula at short notice, the concierge handled requests seamlessly and without fuss. It allowed me to properly switch off.

Bed and bath

The 115 rooms and 82 suites lean into a minimalist, Mediterranean aesthetic with soft neutral palettes, natural materials and an abundance of light. Floor-to-ceiling doors open onto private balconies, overlooking pools, gardens or the neighbouring golf course.

Despite the pared-back design, comfort is paramount: plush beds, generous bathrooms and thoughtful touches throughout.

For families, interconnecting rooms are a godsend, offering space without sacrificing style. With textures plush rather than stark, there aren’t too many breakables in there either, making them baby and toddler-friendly.

Food and drink

Food here is thoughtfully spread across several distinct spaces. Picador is the more formal option, a refined dining room that leans into Andalusian flavours with a contemporary edge. If you have children, it’s a good idea to ask the concierge to help you book a babysitter so you can spend longer lingering over the food.

For daytime grazing, La Bartola is the poolside spot. It’s sun-drenched and unfussy, with grilled dishes, salads, sushi and cold drinks to eat in the restaurant or take to your sun lounger.

Then there’s Bamboleo, which is a nod to Julio Iglesias and the hotel’s musical heritage. Set on a terrace with sweeping views, it provides a stunning setting for cocktails, sharing plates and live flamenco music as the sky turns amber.

For families, La Palmita is the unsung hero. Relaxed and welcoming, it’s ideal for dinner with children in tow, offering a laidback setting where younger guests are more than catered for, and parents can unwind without worrying about formality.

Facilities

Wellness is front and centre at Mood Spa, which is a serene, softly-lit space designed for a full-body reset. Alongside its hydrotherapy circuit, which is the longest on the Costa Del Sol, and treatment rooms, the spa is built around five tailored “wellness journeys”, allowing you to choose how you want to feel. Decide whether you want to relax, heal, reconnect, revitalise or glow, and let the therapists take care of you.

Beyond the spa, there are two large outdoor pools, plenty of loungers for uninterrupted sunbathing, and easy access to two nearby world-class golf courses.

The kids’ club is a genuine highlight. With cooking lessons, art sessions and flamenco workshops, it’s less about babysitting and more about meaningful engagement. The staff are warm, attentive and multilingual, with flawless English, which makes children not only want to go back but skip in each morning.

Accessibility

The resort has step-free routes in many areas and accessible rooms are available on request.

Pet policy

Dogs and cats are welcome (up to 10kg). There is a charge of €75 (£64) per night.

Family-friendly

Rooms are thoughtfully configured for those travelling with children, with interconnecting options that combine a king room with a twin, giving families space without compromising on style. Cots and extra beds can be arranged, and everything from baby monitors to highchairs can be sourced on request.

The kids’ club is a genuine standout, and La Palmita restaurant is particularly well-suited to families.
