Kansas coach Bill Self is facing an uncertain future following his Jayhawks’ season-ending loss to St. John’s on Saturday in the NCAA Tournament.

‘I’ve gone through some stuff off the court, so I’ll get back and get with family and visit and see what’s going on,’ Self, 63, told reporters after the heartbreaking buzzer-beating 76-65 defeat in San Diego.

‘I love what I do. I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I’ll get back home and it will all be discussed.’

Self replaced the legendary Roy Williams in Lawrence back in 2003 and has since won two national titles with Kansas while earning induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.

Since then, he’s had two stents inserted into his heart, was rushed to the hospital back in July, and recently missed a game against Colorado due to health reasons.

Asked if he’s now healthy, Self admitted he wasn’t sure.

‘I don’t know about completely,’ he said. ‘But I’m feeling – I feel as good as I’ve felt in a long time. I’m not making any statements whatsoever. But every year, I think … when you get to be doing it as long as I’ve done it, I look at it in five-year increments.

‘Now I’m probably looking at it in more two-year increments, so to speak. So I try to focus on this season and try to get us to a second weekend, which we failed at. So I’ll go back now and break it down and see where that leads.’

Self has won nine conference titles at Kansas to go with his three Final Four appearances.

However, Kansas hasn’t been to the Sweet 16 since 2022.

The Jayhawks nearly booked their ticket on Sunday after overcoming a 13-point deficit over the last eight minutes, but were ultimately defeated on a last-second layup by St. John’s guard Dylan Darling.

‘The tournament, one of the things that makes it so great is that it can be great, but it can also be cruel,’ Self said. ‘We obviously put ourselves in a position to play from behind the whole game, and then really competed and played great down the stretch. Just didn’t finish what we had started down the stretch.’
