England midfielder Jordan Henderson has joked that he had a ‘night to remember’ after breaking his wrist following the Three Lions’ dramatic win over Mexico on Sunday night.

The 36-year-old suffered the freak injury after slipping as he jumped over an advertising board during the celebrations following England’s historic 3-2 victory at the Azteca Stadium.

Henderson, who will miss the remainder of the tournament, has now broken his silence following the accident, making light of the situation on Instagram.

‘A night to remember that’s for sure,’ he wrote. ‘What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.’

Henderson was returning from singing Wonderwall as part of England’s new post-match ritual, before he landed awkwardly on his left arm, and team-mate Dan Burn immediately signalled for medical help.

Within moments of the accident, the midfielder was attended to by medics and given oxygen, as England’s players formed a ring around their stricken comrade.

He was taken to hospital in Mexico City and has since returned to their Kansas City base to undergo surgery.

Henderson is set to stay with the squad, and his social media posts indicate that he will be with the Three Lions when they face Norway in the quarter-final in Miami on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel sees the Brentford man’s leadership as a key component of the team’s success, even if he has managed just six minutes on the pitch at this World Cup.

His loss leaves Tuchel with three midfielders in Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson and Kobbie Mainoo. The latter, however, is yet to feature at the tournament.

Captain Harry Kane told the BBC: ‘Jordan just fell over there, I think he’s OK, just something to do with his arm.’ Jude Bellingham added: ‘He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got everything under control.

‘It’s probably best not to say too much when I don’t really know what was going on. But everyone was there to support him, and even that was a beautiful thing to see.’

Kane scored the difference-making goal in Mexico City, netting from the spot following a brilliant brace from Jude Bellingham in the first half.

Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez’s strikes didn’t prove to be enough for Mexico, as the 10 men of England, who were without Jarell Quansah from the 54th minute, clung on for one of the country’s best results in their World Cup history.
