Gabriel Langton has been released from hospital after the horror fall he suffered midway through the men’s team gymnastics final on Friday night.
The 18-year-old received extensive treatment before being taken from the arena on a stretcher after missing a grab through his high bar routine and landing on his head and neck.
Team England said in a statement: “Gabriel was transferred to the hospital as a precautionary measure overnight and underwent multiple scans today, with very positive results.
“Thankfully, he has been cleared of any serious injury complications and will be discharged to return to the team hotel this evening.
“He is in good spirits and hugely grateful for the many messages of support and the excellent care provided by the medical teams. He is looking forward to being reunited with the team to celebrate his silver medal.”
Langton had replaced multiple Olympic medallist Max Whitlock in the England team earlier this month when Whitlock withdrew due to injury.
He was absent from the podium when team-mates Luke Whitehouse, Alex Yolshin-Cash, Josh Nathan and Adam Tobin received their silver medals. It was the first time England’s men had failed to win the team event since Delhi in 2010.
Langton’s fall clearly affected the team through the remaining rotation and Whitehouse said: “It was really tough. We just had to reset, try to put it to one side mentally and focus on the job we had to do. I think everyone should be proud of the way we carried on after Gabe’s fall.”
