That was emphatic from Mirra Andreeva, with the 19-year-old blasting through to the semi-finals of the French Open for the second time in her young career. The first time, in 2024, came after a shock victory over Aryna Sabalenka and announced her big breakthrough at the grand slams. This time, everyone knows about her dangerous the eighth seed is. In heavy conditions, she routs Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-3.

Can she now reach her first grand slam final? She will play either Elina Svitolina or Marta Kostyuk on Thursday.

Aryna Sabalenka hopes for more women’s matches in French Open night session

Aryna Sabalenka hopes French Open organisers have been persuaded to put more women’s matches on in the night session after her high-class performance to beat Naomi Osaka.

“I think it’s really important that they put our match today as a night session,” said the top seed.

“I think that’s the right move. I think the atmosphere and the attention that this match brought is going to show them that probably for the future they should consider putting at least sometimes women matches at night.

“So I hope that this is the beginning. It’s like we open up that door for woman night sessions.”

Aryna Sabalenka shines under French Open spotlight to beat Naomi Osaka

The Parisian night belonged to Aryna Sabalenka as the world number one seized a rare chance for the women’s game to shine under the lights at Roland Garros.

For the first time in three years and only the fifth time since the one-match night session was introduced in 2021, a women’s match was given centre stage, ending a sequence of 33 consecutive men’s contests.

Sabalenka’s fourth-round clash with four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka was one of the biggest matches of the tournament so far, but the Japanese star was outplayed in a 7-5 6-3 defeat lasting an hour and 27 minutes.

The victory means Sabalenka has reached at least the quarter-finals in her last 14 major tournaments and she has a first French Open title firmly in her sights.

French Open LIVE: Mirra Andreeva storms to 6-0 set against Sorana Cirstea

Mirra Andreeva is looking very impressive against 18th seed Sorana Cirstea, storming to a 6-0 opening set against the Romanian under the closed roof of Philippe-Chatrier. Andreeva is bidding to reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros for a second time, following her breakthrough in 2024. The teenager has won more matches than any player on the WTA this season and is managing the conditions well.

Andreeva is the youngest player to reach at least three consecutive French Open quarter-finals since Martina Hingis between 1997 and 1999.
