Former NFL star and analyst Ryan Clark broke down in tears as he opened up about his sudden exit from ESPN, claiming he was fired without cause rather than laid off.

Appearing on the latest episode of his podcast, The Pivot, the 46-year-old addressed the emotional weight of his departure and set the record straight on how his decade-long career at the network came to an end.

‘Let me put this to bed – I wasn’t laid off, I was fired,’ Clark declared on the podcast.

‘They’re using layoffs as a cover, a camouflage for what they already intended on doing. But there was no cause for it.’

Clark admitted he felt forced to alter his personality and tone in a desperate bid to save his job before the network ultimately let him go.

‘What makes me sad is I did adjust who I was to try to keep my job,’ Clark explained. ‘For three years we never shied away from any topic on this podcast.

🚨🚨HEARTBREAKING🚨🚨

Ryan Clark was in TEARS talking about getting fired by ESPN and how he wishes he was more like what they wanted on the network.

‘We did this year because I knew I couldn’t have no beef. I knew, for lack of a better word, I couldn’t be too Black. What makes me sad is even in trying to adjust, to be at least more of what certain people wanted, they still fired me.’

When co-host Fred Taylor asked if there was anything he would do differently in hindsight, Clark became visibly overcome with emotion, wiping away tears on camera as he reflected on his decade at ESPN.

‘That’s a good question. It depends on when you ask me,’ Clark said through tears.

‘When I see people in public – OGs, aunties and stuff – and they tell me they’re proud of me, and they’re proud of the way I represent the community… I wouldn’t change anything.’

‘When I go home and this kid from the West Bank is so accepted in New Orleans now… I wouldn’t change that,’ he added. ‘All I ever wanted to do was be accepted and wanted.’

The former Super Bowl champion learned of his termination on Monday while appearing live on NFL Live, receiving a text during a commercial break from his showrunner instructing him to call his boss immediately.

‘I call my boss in the break, and he tells me they’re letting me go,’ Clark recalled. ‘He said, ‘This is a very awkward call. This is a hard call.’ I could hear how hard it was for him.’

Clark insisted he never expected to be let go given the quality of his work and ESPN’s upcoming coverage of Super Bowl LXI in 2027.

‘I didn’t think they could fire me,’ Clark noted. ‘I also didn’t think a company that is going to have the Super Bowl… would fire what is, in my opinion, the best football analyst in the world.’

Reflecting on his bond with his former colleagues, Clark shared a heartfelt post on social media thanking NFL Live co-hosts Laura Rutledge, Mina Kimes, Dan Orlovsky and Marcus Spears, writing: ‘Sharing a desk with you has been one of the greatest honors of my life. You’re my family.’
