Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has shared a major update on Patrick Mahomes, confirming the quarterback has been officially cleared to participate in practice.
Speaking to reporters on Friday as quarterbacks and rookies reported to Missouri Western State University, Reid revealed that the three-time Super Bowl champion faces no restrictions following his recovery from a torn ACL.
‘Pat’s doing great with his [rehab],’ Reid said at a press conference. ‘Right now he’s got clearance to practice and do all the different periods that we have in this camp.
‘We’ll just take it day by day and see how he does. He’ll have plenty of eyes on him from coaches to trainers to doctors. But right now, he’s been cleared to go ahead and participate fully.’
Mahomes was equally thrilled to step back onto the practice field after spending his entire offseason in heavy rehabilitation following surgery on his left knee.
‘I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt, as far as strength and lifting,’ Mahomes said. ‘I feel amazing… I’m excited just to be able to play football.

‘I’ve been seeing cinderblock walls rehabbing every single day in Kansas City. Now to be on that practice field with my teammates, it’s going to be a lot of fun.’
The 30-year-old signal-caller suffered the severe knee injury during a Week 15 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers last December, undergoing surgery shortly after to jumpstart an aggressive rehabilitation timeline.
Addressing whether Mahomes will be ready to take the field for Week 1, Reid expressed optimism while emphasizing a patient approach as camp gets underway.
‘I’m optimistic, and I know he is extremely optimistic,’ Reid explained. ‘But I think you’ve got to see how things go here. Let’s just see where we’re at and not make any predictions or anything else. Take it day by day and see where it goes.’
Shortly after Reid’s comments, the Chiefs released a video of Mahomes arriving for practice. ‘QB1 clocking into camp,’ they wrote in their post on X.
Meanwhile, head coach Reid also praised Mahomes’ relentless work ethic throughout the offseason, commending the franchise player for putting in long hours at the team facility to prepare his knee for the rigors of camp.
‘He’s been up here every day, doing his thing, rehabbing. I mentioned before how much time he spent – if anybody spent time doing this thing the right way, he’s it.
‘We appreciate that. And he’s been given clearance by the doctors to work. And they’re pretty comfortable with that. But keeping an eye on him.’
Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies officially reported to St. Joseph on Friday, giving Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce valuable ramp-up time before the rest of the veteran squad reports on July 28.
While it remains to be seen whether Mahomes will play in August, Reid concluded: ‘We’ll see about games and all that once we get there. But right now, we’re just going to take it day by day and see how he does.’
