Former England cricket captain Mike Smith, who also represented his country in rugby union, has died at the age of 92, Warwickshire County Cricket Club announced on Monday.

Known by his initials MJK, Smith played 50 Test matches for England, and led the side on 25 occasions.

Confirming the news on Monday morning, Warwickshire posted on X: “Warwickshire County Cricket Club are saddened to learn of the passing of Bears’ legend MJK Smith at the age of 92.

“Once a Bear, Always a Bear.”

His illustrious first-class career spanned nearly two decades, predominantly with Warwickshire, where he amassed close to 40,000 runs. His Test debut came in 1958 against New Zealand in Birmingham, and he scored his first international century against India at Old Trafford in 1959, flourishing after a move to the middle order.

Beyond the cricket pitch, Smith was a rare dual international, earning a rugby union cap for England against Wales in 1956.

His Test captaincy, which began with a tour of India in 1963-64, saw him lead England to five victories and 17 draws in 25 matches, suffering defeat only three times.

After retiring from playing, Smith remained deeply involved in the sport, serving as a referee before taking on the influential role of Warwickshire chairman from 1991 to 2003.

This period marked a golden era for the club, with Smith overseeing the acquisition of seven major trophies, including back-to-back County Championship titles in 1994 and 1995.

Smith’s cricketing journey began with Leicestershire before a period of compulsory military service, continuing to represent his native county while studying at Oxford University.

He joined Warwickshire in 1956, becoming captain the following year. His legacy continued through his son, Neil (NMK), who also captained Warwickshire and earned one-day international honours for England.

After Warwickshire announced the news of Smith’s passing on Monday morning, a moment of silence was observed before the start of play on day four of their County Championship match against Glamorgan, honouring a true giant of English sport.
