Alabama has agreed to a new seven-year contract with football coach Kalen DeBoer that will see him earn $12.5million-per-season.

According to ESPN, the new deal, which expires in January 2033 and is worth a staggering $87.5m, was approved by the school’s compensation committee in a meeting on Wednesday.

It contains a $10m buyout – a figure that will be owed if he’s fired or leaves early for another job – that runs until January 2027. The buyout figure then decreases by $2m after each of the next two years.

DeBoer was linked to several high-profile coaching jobs during this offseason but is staying put in Tuscaloosa.

He was a candidate for the vacancies with both Michigan and Penn State, but chose not to interview with either.

‘We are excited about the opportunity to continue our time in Tuscaloosa with this contract extension,’ DeBoer said in a statement.

‘This university has become a special place to us, and I look forward to working to ensure that Alabama football remains at the forefront of college football.

‘This program has a long history of success and an unmatched tradition that I was eager to be a part of two years ago, and I cannot wait to keep coaching our guys and bring more championships to Alabama.’

The 51-year-old had the unenviable task of replacing the legendary Nick Saban, who retired in January 2024 after guiding Alabama to six national championships.

DeBoer has a 20-8 record in his two seasons at Alabama. The Crimson Tide were beaten in the Rose Bowl, the quarterfinals of the playoffs, by the Indiana Hoosiers last season on their way to winning the national championship.
