Edinson Cavani has reportedly agreed to tear up his contract with Argentinian giants Boca Juniors – but wants to keep playing aged 39.

The striker follows fellow former Manchester United star Ander Herrera out the door after he left earlier this month.

Cavani, who was at Old Trafford between 2020 and 2022, joined Boca in 2023 and scored 28 goals in 81 games.

He intends to keep playing but will also balance that with helping to run his award-winning premium wine brand, Cavani Wines, which launched in 2024.

However, his repeated injuries are a major factor in him and his club agreeing to part ways without compensation, according to Ole.

He has only been able to play two matches all season, scoring in neither, due to lumbago and a herniated disc issue.

Earlier this season, he underwent a microsurgery on one of the discs in his back.

But a representative said: ‘He feels good and he is looking forward to it [playing on]. With this cancellation it is not that he is retiring.’

Despite being at one of South America’s most storied sides, Cavani was unable to pick up any silverware with the Buenos Aires club, though he did reach the 2023 Copa Libertadores final, their equivalent of the Champions League’s showpiece game.

This is not the first time that Cavani has torn up his deal at a club.

At his previous side, Valencia of Spain, he reportedly paid £1.3million to terminate his contract.

Cavani’s glittering career in Europe dates back to his arrival in Serie A with Palermo in 2007.

Uruguay’s second-highest goalscorer racked up team and personal accolades in Italy and France with Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain – he won six league titles with the latter – before signing with Manchester United in 2020.

At Old Trafford, Cavani bagged 19 goals in 59 appearances before making a move to Spain.

With Uruguay, he bagged 58 goals in 136 appearances.

That’s enough to be second behind Luis Suarez in their all-time scorer charts, and he also won the 2011 Copa America with them.

Cavani – nicknamed El Matador (The Bullfighter) – hung up his international boots in 2022.
