Andy Robertson will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the club has confirmed – with the Scotland captain the latest talismanic figure to call time on their spell at Anfield in recent weeks.
The defender’s long-term team-mate Mohamed Salah was first to share the bombshell news of his imminent departure in a touching video last month.
But Robertson’s role in the Reds’ successes in recent seasons has been similarly vital, with the club confirming that the 32-year-old will leave Merseyside as ‘a legend’.
‘After nine hugely successful campaigns at Anfield, the Scotland captain will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer,’ a statement issued by Liverpool on Thursday read.
‘He will do so as a genuine Liverpool legend, having played a fundamental role in the successes of recent years over the course of his 373 appearances to date.
‘Signed from Hull City in 2017, Robertson has won two Premier League titles, a Champions League, the FA Cup and two League Cups, as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Community Shield.

‘However, celebration of Robertson’s Liverpool legacy is firmly on hold until the conclusion of the campaign, with the No.26 fully focused on helping the Reds end 2025-26 as successfully as possible.’
Robertson finishing the season as a Liverpool player seemed briefly under threat in January, when the Scotland international emerged as a transfer target for Premier League rivals Tottenham.
But Robertson admitted in March that he was keen to stay at Anfield until he was ‘no longer needed’.
‘There was obviously interest there – there were discussions had with both sets of clubs,’ he said. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made.
‘I was never not committed. I’ve been committed to Liverpool for the last eight and a half or nine years now and I’ll be committed until I’m no longer needed. That’s always been my mindset. This club has given me everything and I’ve given this club everything.’
The Reds will need the support of their defensive stalwart at the business end of the season amid a worrying downturn in form.
Although still to play the second-leg against defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final, Liverpool must overturn a 2-0 deficit when they welcome the Ligue 1 superstars at Anfield next week.
Liverpool could also see their spot in the Premier League table under threat, sitting in fifth just one point ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, and three points ahead of seventh-placed Brentford.
