The race for the golden boot at the World Cup is heading for a thrilling climax featuring some of the best players in the world.
The superstars have lived up their hype at this tournament, none more so than France’s Kylian Mbappe and Argentina hero Lionel Messi. Both have gone tit for tat since the very first outing, each storming past poor Miroslav Klose’s all-time goalscoring record to enter the semi-finals with eight goals apiece.
Mbappe’s three assists could prove the difference but after France’s elimination at the hands of Spain, 38-year-old Messi could be in prime position to take control – unless his French foe racks up the goals in the low-stakes third-place play-off.
However, the talismanic pair are not the only ones in the hunt. England duo Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have both put in tournament-saving individual performances during the knockout stages, with Bellingham following up his captain’s late brace against DR Congo with doubles of his own versus Mexico and Norway. They’re tied in fourth with six goals and one assist, behind Erling Haaland’s seven goals – who despite a sensational World Cup campaign is left to watch on powerless and the rankings take shape following Norway’s exit.
If players are tied for goals, the number of assists will determine who ranks higher. If there is still a tie, it comes down to minutes played and the goals-per-minute ratio.
