Wimbledon fans struggled in the heat of the day as two spectators fainted on the tournament’s Centre Court and No 1 Court just over an hour after the start of play.

With temperatures already 31 degrees on Monday and set to climb as the day continues, the Championships’ largest stage was the first to see a fan struggle amid the sticky heat.

Filipina rising star Alexandra Eala had just broken back in the first set to go 5-4 against former finalist Jasmine Paolini on Centre Court when a person in the stands took ill.

Fellow spectators rushed over with bags of ice to offer support to the fan, who was given assistance under umbrellas before being carried out in the arms of two members of staff.

On No 1 court, it was a similar story at 3-2 in the second set between Flavio Cobolli and Alex de Minaur, with the Italian pausing before serving at 15-15 after noticing a commotion in the stands in full sun.

The spectator was instantly shaded by umbrellas as staff members and ticket-holders alike rushed to offer assistance.

Cobolli himself had been one of the first to notice the fan taking ill, offering them a bottle of water.

During the delay, both Cobolli and De Minaur took refuge in the shade as they waited for play to restart.

The first week of the Championships saw temperatures hover in the mostly pleasant late-twenties, but after Sunday saw the mercury rise to over 30 degrees for the first time at this year’s tournament, it is only expected to get hotter in SW19.

Two weeks ago, Qualifying for the main draw took place in Roehampton amid the summer’s first blistering heatwave, with the temperature a possible factor in a power outage which broke the electronic line calling.

Play was halted in southwest London for over an hour on Wedneday June 24 without the technology.

The tournament had already taken the precaution of pausing their use of ball kids, instead deploying adult grounds staff in the roles as temperatures reached 37 degrees.

Tennis’ heat rules – which utilise Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which measures heat-stress conditions – could yet come into effect this week as the mercury rises, which sees cooling breaks introduced, and play suspended if the WBGT exceeds 32.2 degrees.

The ATP tour codified new heat rules in December of last year, while the women’s tour have followed heat regulations since 1992.

Last month’s French Open saw hotter temperatures set the draw alight as top stars faltered in the adverse conditions.

World No 1 Jannik Sinner was particularly affected just one game from sealing a straight-sets victory against Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

The Italian received a medical timeout and off-court treatment but amid dizziness and a significant drop in energy levels, Sinner was sensationally knocked out of Paris in the second round.

Sinner is set to take to No 1 Court for his quarter-final match versus Jan-Lennard Struff at 1pm on Tuesday, with the temperature expected to hover around 30 degrees.
