- Michael Maguire implements changes at Red Hill
- Players are required to keep shirts on at training
- Maguire is putting his stamp on the Broncos
Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has shown he means business at his new club, reportedly implementing a ban on his players taking their shirts off while training.
Maguire has wasted no time putting his stamp on Red Hill after the club’s disappointing finish to the 2024 season.
During Kevin Walters’ time in charge, players were often photographed going shirtless during training sessions – but that’s all changed.
News Corp reports that Maguire is changing club standards and making sure players always have their kit on while training in an attempt to change the ‘rock star’ culture.
Broncos stars have also been spotted wearing official kit while away from the paddock – which is a big change.
Maguire has a reputation for creating disciplined teams, and it looks like he is already achieving this.

‘It’s about creating the environment that we’re in. I want a high standard and it’s important they help drive and create it themselves,’ Maguire said.
‘That’s part of success. How you’re turning up is very important. That’s the professional part of being a rugby league player at this level.
‘If the guys do that well, you’re going to get a pretty good output with the people that we have.’
The Broncos have been criticised for having a ‘rock-star’ mentality, but Maguire says he hasn’t seen it so far.
‘I’m not going to judge anyone,’ he said.
‘I haven’t seen that side (rock star) of things with the players.
‘What I will say is perceptions are built, but you can change perceptions with what you do. What we get to build now is where we want to take the club and how we want to shape the club.
‘I know they all care because I’ve had conversations with them and they all care very deeply for the Broncos.’

Meanwhile, Maguire says he is not guaranteeing that Adam Reynolds the captaincy of the side for 2025, saying he will make up his mind in the new year.
‘As a captain he has had to go through a bit and he’s copped some stick, but he will be out there showing exactly who he is when he’s playing,’ Maguire said.
‘We will discuss (the captaincy). Reyno is a leader. I’ve had a lot of great experiences with Reyno but we want some more.
‘How that leadership and captaincy of the team looks, we will discuss that throughout January.
‘There’s some things I will be doing with the team but he is a very good leader.’
