Ben Stokes has warned that England’s in-demand players could walk away from Test cricket altogether if there is a push-back on playing in the Indian Premier League.

Jofra Archer is not featuring in the first Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lord’s starting on Thursday, following a successful season with Rajasthan Royals by taking a post-competition break in Barbados, but is expected to play later in the series.

It coincides with IPL franchises beginning to sign up the world’s biggest stars on multi-year deals, with South African batsman Heinrich Klaasen retiring from international cricket to pledge his future to Sunrisers Hyderabad last year.

‘Yes, in an ideal situation it would be unbelievably great to have everyone who you want available at every single opportunity,’ Stokes said.

‘That is not the way of cricket at the moment. There is so much more out there for players. I get both sides of the story. The ‘why is Jof not here?’ But also understand there are other opportunities and you want players to be able to do them, and also play for England.

‘There is a situation where it could get messy and players like Jofra might not play for England again if you handle it in a different way, and that is not good for anyone.

‘Jofra has shown that he’s committed and loves playing for England. Just because he’s not available for this first Test match does not change that.’

Mark Butcher claimed that the centrally-contracted Archer staying on to play for Rajasthan in the knockout stages of a tournament in which he finished as the third highest wicket-taker was ‘absolutely ludicrous’ while Michael Vaughan, David Gower and Mike Atherton have also been highly critical.

‘A lot of points people are making around Jof and that situation, are to do with the landscape when they were playing. But it’s completely different now. There’s opportunities for cricketers now that there was not 10, 15, 20 years ago,’ Stokes countered.

Jacob Bethell retains his place at No 3, the position from which he scored a maiden Test hundred in Sydney in January, after returning early from champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, Bethell was not being selected and did so amid concerns over a badly torn nail on the ring finger of his left hand.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s spinning all-rounder Rachin Ravindra asked to leave Kolkata Knight Riders’ bench to focus on this tour, scoring a Test-turning hundred against Ireland in Belfast last week.
