West Ham invoked concussion protocols as they treated Lukasz Fabianski following the goalkeeper’s sickening collision with Southampton defender Nathan Wood on Boxing Day.
Fabianski received around eight minutes of treatment in worrying scenes at St Mary’s after taking a blow to the head and neck in the first half of their victory over Southampton.
And Mail Sport can confirm that the former Arsenal star was treated as a concussion case by medics on the field.
West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui provided a positive update regarding Fabianski’s condition after the game saying the Pole was conscious and speaking.
Nevertheless, Fabianski, who is being closely monitored and is expected to have a routine check up by external doctors before he returns to availability, will miss Sunday’s clash against Liverpool owing to guidelines that state a player must not return to competitive action for at least six days following a concussion.
‘He had one big knock around the head, around the neck and he was not very sure about his actions.
‘Fortunately the news is he is talking, he is alert, he is conscious,’ Lopetegui said.
‘The doctors say that he feels better and well. I am positive with him. ‘He showed he more or less recovered his sense.
‘I am not afraid. We feared but now he is better and it is a positive feeling because we were very worried.’
