Wayne Rooney suffered an injury that may require surgery while recording a segment of his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show.

The former England star interviewed ex-Everton teammate Jordan Pickford for the show, which was broadcast before Saturday’s FA Cup final, won by Manchester City.

The pair also went through some goalkeeping drills at the Merseyside club’s training camp, when Rooney injured his left hand diving to save a Pickford penalty.

He later revealed he had consulted a surgeon about treatment and was set for another consultation to decide if he will need surgery on his wrist.

Sporting a wrist brace on BBC coverage on Saturday, Rooney said: “I went in goal and then it was a great save off Jordan and then I’ve messed my hand up.

“I’m with a surgeon. I’ve been in the hospital and I’m back on Monday.”

The former Manchester United player later added: “Look at that for a save! I saved that and hurt my hand. I’m seeing a surgeon on Monday to see if I need surgery.

“By the way, just for the newspapers out there, I haven’t got my wedding ring on because my fingers have swollen up – I know they will make a big thing! It’s hurt but it’ll be fine.”

Rooney re-joined Everton shortly after Pickford moved there from Sunderland in 2017. They had previously met on England duty, with Pickford saying: “I watched you growing up and when I was watching you in the Euros and getting in an England squad, everyone looked up to you.

“So even then [on the bus] I was texting saying: ‘I’m opposite Wazza.’ I was shaking.

“I was on the bench and it was a great experience. My dream was to play for England. We know there’s only that small percentage of kids growing up get that opportunity.”
