A video purporting to show the sinking of an Iranian warship has been released by the United States Department of Defense.

The type of warship and the exact date of when the video was filmed could not be verified.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that a U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka on Wednesday (March 4).

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said the Iranian vessel was the IRIS Dena.

Mr Hegseth vowed continued and intensifying military pressure on Iran amid the widening conflict in the Middle East.
