USA 2-0 Australia – PLAYER RATINGS: Which Socceroo star was anonymous throughout and who was out of his depth as Tony Popovic’s side were roundly beaten by the co-hosts

Australia have been brought crashing back to earth at the hands of co-tournament hosts USA.

The Socceroos came into the game in high spirits following their 2-0 win over Turkiye in their opening fixture.

But they really struggled to get a foothold in the game as the USA set about them from the opening stages.

Mohamed Toure carried a very early threat as he raced away from the American defence and got a snapshot away.

But from there it was all America who took a 2-0 lead before half-time thanks to a Cameron Burgess own goal and an Alex Freeman header from close range.

Tony Popovic also got his team selection wrong as he rested both of his goalscorers from the win over Turkiye with Nishan Velupillay and Mathew Leckie really struggled to have any sort of impact on proceedings.

Cameron Burgess’ early own goal set the tone for a very poor Australian display

There was a chance for Cristian Volpato as Irankunda showed the threat he carries as he latched on to a long ball and cut it back, only for Volpato to lash an effort over the bar.

They now head into their third game against Panama knowing that a draw should be just about enough to see them through.

Australia  (5-4-1)

Patrick Beach – 6/10

Could do little about the first goal as Folarin Balogun poked the ball past him before Burgess put through his own net.

Was unlucky for the second goal as he had already decided to dive to his right when Sergino Dest’s effort from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection and looped into the air.

Jacob Italiano – 4/10

Struggled to contain anything coming down his side as Anthony Robinson’s marauding runs from full-back often flew by Italiano.

Played Alex Freeman on for America’s second goal as his struggles were compounded on the stroke of half-time.

Alessandro Circatti – 5/10

Booked on the half-hour mark as he stamped down the calf of Malik Tillman.

Did a fantastic job to track down Folarin Balogun who had broken away from the Australian defence five minutes into the second-half and keep the game alive for Australia.

Harry Souttar struggled to keep up with Folarin Balogun who regularly exposed his lack of pace

Harry Souttar – 3/10

Really struggled to match the runs of Folarin Balogun as the American striker had pace to burn, but did win a couple of crucial headers in his own box.

Evidenced when the striker raced clear from inside his own half shortly after the restart with Souttar only able to watch on as Circatti saved their blushes.

Booked for some handbags with Balogun five minutes from time as he tried to show some fight.

Cameron Burgess – 2/10

Put through his own net to give USA an early lead when he couldn’t sort his feet out to clear a Balogun cross.

Looked well out of his depth at times, most evidently when he needlessly headed the ball out for a corner under very little pressure.

Hooked at half-time.

Jordan Bos – 3/10

First name into the referee’s book as he struggled to contain Sergino Dest and Malik Tillman down Australia’s left.

A non-factor in possession as well.

Mathew Leckie – 4/10

Fortunate to escape an early yellow for a dangerous looking lunge on Tyler Adams as he tried to make an early impact. Was unable to keep up with the pace of the Americans out of possession.

Was a good outlet when he was able to get on the ball. and saw a wicked cross turned behind by Freeman.

Unfortunately had to come off injured midway through the second-half.

Aiden O’Neil – 3/10

Held his shape as his manager perhaps would have wanted but did little to impact the game other than that.

Stood off of both McKennie and Adams allowing the pair to dictate the flow of the game.

Paul Okon-Engstler – 4/10

Snapped into a number of challenges as he tried to keep Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams honest in possession but could not keep up with the American midfield.

Like his partner, he really struggled to make an impact with the ball at his feet.

Nishan Velupillay struggled to make an impact as he replaced Nestory Irankunda in the starting line-up

Nishan Velupillay struggled to make an impact as he replaced Nestory Irankunda in the starting line-up

Nishan Velupillay – 2/10

Pretty much anonymous throughout the first-half as Australia struggled to get into the game at all.

Hooked at half-time as Tony Popovic attempted to find a spark for his side.

Mohamed Toure – 5/10

Started lively with an early shot at goal that tested the American goalkeeper. Lively when able to get on the ball though that wasn’t very often.

When they did look for him, it wasn’t to his strengths as he was forced to try and win headers from long balls.

Unfortunate to be subbed off at half-time as he was one of the side’s only bright spots.

Subs:

Nestory Irankunda – 6/10

Couple of strange touches in his own half as he attempted to pick up the pace of the game in the second-half.

Much like Toure he cut a lonely figure as his team struggled to get a foothold in the game.

But showed off his scorching pace when played in behind. Should have had an assist as his cutback was skied by Cristian Volpato and was perhaps unlucky to not win a penalty.

Jason Geria – 3/10

Thrown into a bit of a buzzsaw as Tony Popovic tried to freshen up his side at half-time.

Connor Metcalfe – 4/10

Some bright moments as he tried to get his team back into the game. Had a snapshot from the edge of the box comfortably claimed by Freis.

Cristian Volpato – 4/10

Had a chance to get Australia back in the game when Irankunda laid it on a plate for him, but Volpato smashed his effort over the bar.

 Tony Popovic – 2/10

Got his team selection wrong when he decided to leave Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe on the bench.

Tried to correct his mistake by bringing on Irankunda at half-time along with Metcalfe, but it was too little too late.

Will now turn his attention to a critical game against Panama.
