Rail travellers in the Netherlands can now take unlimited train journeys this summer for less than €50 (£43) a month.

Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), a passenger railway operator in the Netherlands, has collaborated with the government to offer affordable train travel under the Nederland Dal Vrij subscription.

Travellers must purchase the offer by 30 June for up to two months of unlimited train travel outside of peak hours.

NS said: “For €49 (£43) per month, you can travel endlessly throughout the Netherlands during off-peak hours. From Groningen to Middelburg and from Maastricht to Den Helder, the Netherlands lies at your feet.”

Off-peak hours include Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and 6.30pm to 6.30am, and from 6.30pm Friday to 4am on Monday.

State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management, Annet Bertram, presented the first subscription to four participants in De Langste Treinrace on Public Transport Day.

In the Netherlands, children up to 11 years old travel for free on NS trains with a Kids Vrij subscription.

The discounted online fare is almost €80 (£70) cheaper than the usual €127.95 (£110) ticket.

According to NS, the offer has a maximum budget and will be stopped if this is “at risk of being exceeded”.

It added that for most travellers, the subscription is already cost-effective with just two return trips per week.

On 21 June, NS also organised “The Longest Train Race” of the Netherlands, to show “how beautiful our country is”.

Ten teams collected points by covering as many kilometres as possible by train.

Parking at station garages is also discounted until 30 August for €2 (£1.75) a day to encourage travellers to take the train.
