Trent McDuffie has put pen to paper on an historic $124 million contract extension just days after being traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the LA Rams.

The cornerback won two Super Bowls alongside Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in KC, but is now heading for pastures new after the Rams sent a first-round pick in exchange for the player.

Now, McDuffie has become the highest-paid cornerback in history after ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported he has agreed a $124m deal, $100m of which is guaranteed.

The deal is four years, meaning McDuffie is guaranteed at least $25m a season but could earn up to $31m a year if he meets certain targets in his contract.

McDuffie, 25, has been with the Chiefs since he was selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

In trading McDuffie, Kansas City received four draft picks including the 29th selection this year. The Chiefs also earned fifth- and sixth-round picks next month, as well as a third-round pick in 2027.

Trent McDuffie has signed a huge $124 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams

The Rams still own the No 13 pick this year, thanks to a draft-day swap with the Falcons in 2025.

Over four seasons in Kansas City, McDuffie established himself as one of the best defensive players in the NFL.

And his exit did not go down well with Patrick Mahomes. ‘Damn,’ the Chiefs quarterback wrote on social media shortly after the news broke.

Led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, the Rams reached the NFC Championship Game, only to suffer a narrow loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

They will now add McDuffie to their roster after the 25-year-old failed to agree a new deal with the Chiefs. His four-year rookie deal – worth nearly $14m – ran through the 2025 season.

It is not the first time in recent years that the Chiefs have allowed a star cornerback to leave rather than give them a lucrative contract extension.

Back in 2024, Reid let L’Jarius Sneed go to the Tennessee Titans, while Jaylen Watson is set to become a free agent this week.
