A fire in in Mallorca’s popular tourist hub of Magaluf has left two people dead and several others injured.

The blaze ignited at around 5 a.m. Thursday on the third floor of a residential building, according to the Spanish Civil Guard, which is investigating the cause.

Residents’ tried to put out the flames but were unsuccessful, with the fire spreading rapidly to upper levels before firefighters extinguished it about two hours later.

Local authorities said four people were hospitalized, with around 20 residents affected. Nearby hotels will provide temporary housing.

One of the victims who died has been identified as a 58-year-old Argentine citizen; the other victim is an unidentified woman. Both were in separate apartments.

The floor where the fire originated, along with levels directly above and below it, has been cordoned off for investigation.

Magaluf, a popular beach and nightlife destination for young British and German tourists, is on the Mediterranean island. Local authorities declared two days of mourning following the tragedy.
