President Donald Trump has bragged about how his ongoing war in Iran is so far shorter than the Second World War, the Vietnam War and the Korean War.
The war in Iran began more than nine weeks ago on February 28 after the U.S. and Israel launched joint missile strikes, pounding the Middle East nation and assassinating Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump’s graphic posted Wednesday night claimed the “Iran Excursion” had been going on for six weeks.
“Wow. Study this Chart! President DJT,” the simple post read.
It comes as the president has claimed the conflict will be “over quickly” and is going “unbelievably well,” while also warning that he could order “higher level” strikes if Iran rejects a peace deal.
Trump’s graphic compared the length of the Iran war to the Afghanistan War at 543 weeks, the Iraq War at 457 weeks, the Vietnam War at 439 weeks, the U.S. Civil War at 209 weeks, World War II at 196 weeks, the Korean War at 161 weeks and the War of 1812 at 139 weeks.
After weeks of bombing, including a deadly strike on an elementary school that investigators believe was likely hit by a U.S. missile, Trump announced a ceasefire had been reached on April 7. Tensions have simmered over the Strait of Hormuz, the essential waterway where a fifth of the world’s oil passes through, which is still being blocked by Iran.
At home, Americans have seen their gas prices skyrocket during the conflict and Trump’s approval ratings have plummeted, according to the latest polling.
A recent Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll found that 66 percent of Americans disapprove of the president’s handling of the Iran war, compared to 33 percent who approve.
“The gas will go down as soon as the war is over. It will drop like a rock. There’s so much of it. It’s all over the place, sitting all over the oceans of the world, and it’ll go down,” Trump said at the White House last week.
After it was reported by Axios Wednesday that the White House believed a deal was close, Trump then threatened to bomb Iran again in a Truth Social post.
“Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran,” Trump posted. “If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Trump now appears optimistic that a peace deal with Iran could be reached soon, though major disagreements reportedly remain over Tehran’s nuclear weapons program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran is reviewing the latest proposal to end the conflict, according to Iranian media.
