French President Emmanuel Macron visited Donald Trump at the White House Monday, where the two men joined a call with other G7 leaders to discuss ending Russia’s war on Ukraine and the future of U.S. relations with Europe.
Leaving the White House, Macron said the call had been “perfect” and told The Independent that Trump had been “very friendly, as always,” despite the president not greeting him upon arrival. Video of the pair showed them exchanging a cordial, if slightly lengthy, handshake.
Meanwhile the president announced that former Secret Service agent turned far-right podcaster Dan Bongino will serve as deputy director of the FBI under the bureau’s new director Kash Patel.
Bongino, 50, an ex-New York City police officer, has been a familiar presence in right-wing media in recent years, hosting his own Fox News show between 2021 and 2023.
Elsewhere, Elon Musk lashed out online after a Pentagon official called the ultimatum email he sent out to federal workers over the weekend, asking them to justify their roles or risk losing them, the “silliest thing in 40 years.”
“Anyone with the attitude of that Pentagon official needs to look for a new job,” the billionaire snapped on X after the email prompted a confused reaction from department heads.

100-plus House Dems send letter to Trump administration about Musk’s email ‘stunt’
More than 100 House Democrats have signed a letter to Trump administration officials telling them to immediately tell federal workers they do not have to reply to Elon Musk’s email “stunt” asking them to explain their accomplishments last week or risk being fired.
“Whether Mr. Musk understands it or not, America is a nation of laws, our government is a system of checks and balances, and federal agencies will not be reorganized by social media post,” the lawmakers wrote.
“This stunt is yet another example of the cruel and arbitrary chaos Mr. Musk inflicts on the American people by carelessly ‘taking a chainsaw’ to the people’s government and the dedicated public servants who keep it running.
“Mr. Musk’s consistent refusal to take any amount of care before disrupting operations across the federal government imposes far greater costs than it will legitimately save.”
