Trent Alexander-Arnold netted a stunning goal in Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
With captain Virgil van Dijk rested as part of a rotated Reds side that included a debut for 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, Alexander-Arnold was handed the armband for the third-round fixture.
The Premier League leaders were quick to seize the initiative against their League Two opposition, and Diogo Jota fired them into the lead after 29 minutes.
The visitors defended resolutely throughout much of their first half, but were once again undone after Alexander-Arnold doubled his side’s advantage on the brink of the interval.
After receiving the ball from Dominik Szoboszlai on the edge of the penalty box, the defender unleashed a strike that left Stanley’s Everton loanee goalkeeper Billy Crellin helpless as the ball sailed into the top corner.
The strike comes just days after the 26-year-old was widely criticised for his performance as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United.

Speaking at half time Reds legend Robbie Fowler insisted the goal will give Alexander-Arnold a confidence boost.
‘There’s a lot to do. There’s one area where he can hit the ball and he hits it,’ Fowler said on ITV.
‘I think that goal will give him a bit of a lift. Trent’s been busy, he’s been a handful. Liverpool have control of the wide areas.’
Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield has been a subject of considerable scrutiny this season amid interest from Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and could leave his boyhood club on a free transfer if a new deal is not agreed.
