The hockey community has been left in mourning after three teenage stars were killed in a car crash while travelling to Canada on Monday morning.

At around 11am, Southern Alberta Mustangs players JJ Wright, Cameron Casorso and Caden Fine were fatally injured after their car collided with a semi-truck in Stavely, Alberta, according to CTV News. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Fine, a 17-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama, was a centre for the hockey team, while Wright was a left-winger and Casorso a goalie. Both were 18-years-old and from Kamloops, British Columbia.

The news was confirmed by a team statement which read: ‘It is with unimaginable heartbreak that we confirm three players from the Southern Alberta Mustangs were killed in a motor vehicle accident earlier today while travelling to team practice.

‘There are no words that can adequately express the depth of our grief. These young men were more than hockey players – they were teammates, sons, brothers, friends, and deeply loved members of our Mustangs family and the communities we call home.

‘The Southern Alberta Mustangs organization is working closely with authorities and will continue to support our players, staff, and families in every way possible during this incredibly difficult time’.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed: ‘The driver of the semi, a 40-year-old male resident of Stavely, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

‘Unfortunately, all three occupants of the passenger vehicle, two 18-year-old male residents of Kamloops, B.C., and a 17-year-old Alabama, U.S.A, resident, were declared deceased at the scene.’

Officials also confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.

In wake of the tragic incident, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on X: ‘My heart breaks for the families of the three young hockey players killed in a car accident near Stavely, Alberta.

‘Canadians are keeping the entire Southern Alberta Mustangs community in our thoughts as they face this unimaginable grief’.

Tributes for the trio have began pouring in following the tragic ordeal. On Monday night, NHL side the Calgary Flames held a minute of silence for the teenagers prior to their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

A memorial has also been set up for the trio – which featured their respective jerseys and sticks – at the Stavely Arena.
