  • Man reportedly aged in his 70s was unable to be revived at the scene

A footy supporter died at the MCG while watching Thursday night’s AFL clash between Carlton and Richmond.

The man is believed to be a Tigers supporter aged in his 70s.

The medical emergency unfolded on the fourth level in the AFL Reserve as the final siren went.

Two fans attempted to revive the man as stadium medical staff rushed back up the aisles to assist.

‘Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the death of a man in Richmond on Thursday, 12 March,’ a Victoria Police statement read.

‘Emergency services tried to revive the man at a sports ground on Brunton Avenue about 10.15pm.

Terrible news from the MCG tonight. A man passed away while watching the footy in the AFL Reserve on the top level.

A nearby witness said the man was a Richmond supporter who was cheering loudly in the first half, thought to be in his 70s. Two people tried to revive him as the… pic.twitter.com/qtVOMamPZc

‘He sadly died at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious.’

The AFL and Richmond are yet to comment on the incident.

On the field, Carlton denied a fast-finishing Tigers to win a thriller by four points in front of 74,313 fans.

Blues coach Michael Voss was happy to walk away with the victory.

‘It doesn’t matter where you are on the ladder…the reality is, these games are always hard-fought,’ he said.

‘The competition isn’t settled yet, so these sorts of wins are really important.’

His opposite Adam Yze was left lamenting what could have been.

‘We weren’t up to standard early on and our players know that. We just obviously gave them too much of a start,’ he said.

‘As a coach, at halftime when you’re that far behind, all you can ask for is a response.

‘I’m really proud of the boys’ effort to provide that…we gave ourselves a chance to win the game.’
