Trabzonspor want to keep Andre Onana after Manchester United told the Cameroon goalkeeper they don’t want him back.

Onana has impressed at Trabzon since arriving on loan from United in September, and helped the club to reach the Turkish Cup final on Wednesday night.

However, United have decided not to reintegrate the 30-year-old over the summer to compete with Senne Lammens, even though they will be in the market for a new keeper if current No.2 Altay Bayindir leaves. The feeling is that Onana’s £120,000-a-week salary and extrovert personality would make it difficult to put him on the bench.

Trabzon have decided that they want to keep him and currently the most likely option is that he stays there on loan, although there will be interest from other clubs.

The Super Lig side could sign Onana permanently but may struggle to afford the transfer fee as United try to recoup as much as possible of the £47.2million paid to Inter Milan for him in the summer of 2023.

Speaking last month after Onana saved three penalties in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals against Samsunspor, club president Ertugrul Dogan said: ‘We love him. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay.’

Wednesday’s 2-1 comeback win over Genclerbirligi saw Trabzon go through to the final against Konyaspor next week.

Besiktas have also expressed an interest in Onana, although they could make another bid to sign Bayindir after United rejected their approach for the Turk in the January transfer window.

Onana, who has made 102 appearances for United, still has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford – and a house on the outskirts of Manchester – so it’s possible he could return for pre-season training in July.

But it’s understood that United would prefer to avoid that scenario by finding him a new club over the next two months.
