Tottenham are looking to appoint a new psychologist just weeks after Roberto De Zerbi pointed to ‘mentality’ issues at the struggling club.

Spurs, who are inside the Premier League’s relegation zone with just five games to go, conceded a devastating stoppage-time equaliser to draw against Brighton last Saturday, missing out on two crucial points in their fight for survival.

Tottenham’s players sank to the floor in despair as Georginio Rutter’s late strike pierced the back of the net, with Xavi Simons on the brink of tears and defender Kevin Danso, who was at fault for the goal, among those on his haunches.

After watching his side dismally lose 1-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light during his first match in charge, De Zerbi admitted that Tottenham’s players are grappling with a ‘mentality problem’ and are void of confidence amid the threat of relegation.

With zero Premier League wins so far in 2026 and two points adrift of West Ham, Spurs are gearing up for a crucial trip to Molineux to face already-relegated Wolves on Saturday.

Just days after Daily Mail Sport revealed the club were advertising for a ‘Health and Wellbeing Executive’, Tottenham are now searching for a psychologist to join their ranks.

The job listing was posted by Tottenham to social media platform LinkedIn on Tuesday, with the club advertising for a Men’s First Team Lead Psychologist.

While the role may not have been introduced in time to aid them in their scrap for survival this season, Tottenham hope that improving the mental resilience and fortitude of their players will have a positive impact on the club’s future.

‘Tottenham Hotspur Football Club is committed to building a world-class performance environment for our Men’s First Team,’ the job description read.

‘As part of this ambition, we are seeking an outstanding Performance Psychologist to join our Performance Team. This is a high-impact role embedded within the Men’s First Team environment at Hotspur Way.

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team you will lead the delivery of evidence-based psychological support to elite professional players.

‘The role encompasses individual player support, systemic work across the coaching and performance staff, and the ongoing development of a psychologically informed performance culture throughout the team.

This role demands a practitioner who is credible, discreet, and highly effective in a Premier League environment, capable of building trust with players and coaches while operating with the professional rigor expected at the highest level of the game.’

Spurs have also advertised for a sports psychologist to join their women’s team.

Richarlison is one player in De Zerbi’s first-team squad to have opened up previously on the benefits of seeing a psychologist.

In March 2024, the Brazilian spoke candidly about how having therapy ‘saved’ his life and encouraged others with mental health problems to do the same.

Inspired to see a psychologist after seeing photographs of himself in tears upon being substituted during Brazil’s 5-1 World Cup qualifying win over Bolivia, Richarlison said: ‘My words were very important, also for the people here in the national team.

‘When I got there, the psychologist was already there. I don’t think there’s ever been that here before.

‘So it was important. And also the affection I received from people because we know the prejudice that arises when people say they are looking for help. I myself had this prejudice, but thank God, I no longer have it.

‘As a national team player who has such an active voice, I want to tell people to seek help and I can particularly say that, because it saved my life like that.’
