Blackburn Rovers legend Tony Parkes has died aged 76, the club have confirmed.

Parkes enjoyed a 34-year association with the Lancashire club as a player and manager.

The Sheffield-born midfielder joined Rovers in 1970 and made more than 400 appearance for them until 1982.

After his retirement, he went into coaching and worked under Kenny Dalglish during their 1994-95 Premier-League winning season.

He also served as the club’s caretaker boss on six occasions between 1986 and 2004, taking charge of 74 games in total.

In 2020 he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and his daughter Natalie launched a fundraiser in 2022 to help with the ongoing cost of his care.

Rovers wrote: ‘Blackburn Rovers are devastated to learn of the passing of Tony Parkes.

‘A true club legend, often referred to as ‘Mr Blackburn Rovers’, Tony passed away last night at the age of 76.’

They added: ‘Everyone at Blackburn Rovers sends their deepest heartfelt condolences to Tony’s daughter Natalie and all his family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

‘A special tribute will be held to celebrate Tony’s life and his outstanding contribution to the club’s history at Rovers’ final home game of the season against Leicester City on Saturday May 2nd.’

Tributes have been pouring in for Parkes since news of his passing broke.

Alan Shearer wrote on X: ‘RIP Tony. A great man.’

Parkes also spent 23 games in charge of Blackpool as caretaker manager in the 2008-09 campaign, helping them to safety in the Championship.

The Tangerines wrote on X: ‘Everyone at Blackpool FC is devastated to hear this news.

‘Our love and best wishes go out to all of Tony’s family, friends and everyone at Blackburn Rovers.’
