Departing No 8 Tom Willis has been named Gallagher Prem player of the season as Saracens rugby completed a Rugby Awards double despite missing out on the play-offs.

Willis will return to Bordeaux Begles this summer but has been in outstanding form in this campaign in north London, beating more defenders than any other player in the top-flight.

The 27-year-old, who has not been picked by England this year and will become ineligible after his Top 14 move, was voted player of the season by his fellow Prem players, while clubmate Noah Caluori has been named breakthrough player of the season after topping the try-scoring charts.

Caluori scored 18 times in the Prem this season, twice registering five tries in a single game – both times against Sale Sharks.

Phil Dowson, meanwhile, has received the director of rugby of the year gong after steering Northampton Saints to a top-of-the-table finish.

In Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR), Saracens scrum half Olivia Apps earned top honours as player of the season. The Canadian arrived at the club as injury cover but proved an influential addition for Alex Austerberry’s side.

Young Loughborough forward Haineala Lutui is given the breakthrough award having made her Red Roses debut during the Women’s Six Nations after a strong season with Lightning.

Other awards handed out at a joint ceremony included England player of the year prizes to Leicester prop Joe Heyes and Saracens fly half Zoe Harrison.

The Rugby Players Association (RPA) Blyth Spirit Award was accepted by Lewis Moody, who will take on a charity cycling challenge ahead of the Prem final after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) last year.
