Beans on toast has always been one of Britain’s most reliable comforts. A tin of beans, a slice of toast, maybe a scattering of cheddar if you’re feeling generous – the sort of meal that appears at breakfast, lunch, dinner or midnight without anyone questioning it. It’s cheap, cheerful and deeply familiar, which is precisely why most people wouldn’t dream of tinkering with it.
Naturally, TikTok has other ideas.
With air fryers now firmly embedded in British kitchens – racking up more than 29 million Google searches and over half a million searches for air fryer recipes in the past month alone – it was probably only a matter of time before the nation’s most dependable comfort meal ended up in the basket.
The viral version, shared by creator Elle Gibson, tweaks the formula just enough to make it interesting. Instead of piling beans onto toast afterwards, everything goes in together: a slice of sourdough hollowed out slightly to hold the beans, topped with a generous layer of cheese and slid into the air fryer until bubbling and golden. The beans thicken and caramelise, the cheese forms a crisp lid, and the toast holds its structure rather than dissolving into sogginess.
Mimi Morley, senior recipe development manager at HelloFresh, says: “We’ve seen some questionable ‘hacks’ in our time, but this one has legs.
“By air-frying, you’re dehydrating the tomato sauce just enough to intensify the flavour, while achieving a level of structural integrity in the bread that stands up to the beans. It’s no longer just breakfast; it’s a texture-driven experience.”
Which might sound like a grand way of describing beans on toast. But once you see the molten cheese, crisp edges and thickened beans that emerge from the air fryer, it starts to make sense. A British classic – just with a little more crunch.
Air fryer beans on toast
“Guys this is just insane,” says Elle Gibson. “It gets the most delicious crust over the cheese and beans. It’s just absolutely unreal. I swear to god I could eat this every single day. It’s gooey, it’s delish. Beans on toast supremacy!”
Serves: 1
Ingredients:
1 slice of sourdough
3 heaped tbsp baked beans
Cheese, grated (could be Parmesan or your preferred vegan cheese)
Salt and pepper
Olive oil spray
Togarashi seasoning (optional)
Method:
1. Scoop out a bit of sourdough to create a well for the beans.
2. Add your beans to the well and grate some cheese over it.
3. Grind some salt and pepper over the beans and cheese mix, to taste.
4. Spray with olive oil.
5. Air fry at 200C for around 8 minutes – or check every few minutes until the cheese is melted and golden and the bread has toasted.
6. Serve with your preferred toppings (Gibson prefers togarashi but you could also use Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco or chilli oil).
