Lessons in Lifestyle

Olivia and Liam were the most popular baby names in America for 2025, marking a seventh consecutive year both names held the top spot in the U.S. Social Security Administration’s annual data.

Ahead of Mother’s Day every year, Social Security releases the list of the 1,000 most popular baby names based on Social Security card applications submitted at birth for the previous calendar year.

For 2025, the most popular baby names remained mostly consistent with the previous year’s top 10 ranking, with only Charlotte climbing to second place among girls, ending Emma’s six-year run in the runner-up slot.

After reigning as a top 10 fixture for several years, Ava dropped from the top 10 entirely and was replaced by Eliana, a name meaning “my God has answered” in Hebrew, which debuted in tenth place.

The name, which is sometimes used in the Jewish community to represent gratitude for a long-awaited child, also has roots in French and Greek, where it means “sun.” It is also popular in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries.

After Olivia, Charlotte and Emma as the top three, the most popular girls’ names were Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Evelyn, Sofia and Eliana.

On the boys’ name list, no new names were inducted into the top 10 for 2025, with the top four — Liam, Noah, Oliver, and Theodore — holding their places.

Henry, James, Elijah, Mateo, William and Lucas made up the rest of the top 10 ranking, with the latter two names swapping places.

Liam has been the most popular boys’ name every year since 2017, and it came second in 2014, 2015 and 2016, climbing up from third place in 2013.

Olivia has been in the top 10 since 2001 and has occupied the top spot since 2019.

Beyond the top 10, 2025’s rising names included Kasai — a boys’ name meaning “fire” in Japanese and Swahili — entered the top 1,000 for the first time at 639.

Klarity — a contemporary spelling of the word “clarity” evoking brightness and light — led the rising list for girls’ names.

The Social Security Administration tracks baby names annually, maintaining records dating back to 1880.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the exceptional mothers who inspire us and guide future generations,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano.

“As Mother’s Day draws closer, I find myself reflecting on the unwavering care, courage, and commitment my own mother instilled in my siblings and me as the glue that held our family together.”
