The Premier League title race is set to reach a fever pitch this Sunday, with Manchester City and Arsenal clashing in a high-stakes encounter that could well decide the destination of the coveted trophy.

Yet, amid the tactical battles and immense pressure, one player is poised to approach the fixture with the carefree spirit of a pre-season exhibition: Rayan Cherki.

The French playmaker has rapidly emerged as a revelation in his debut English season, embodying a refreshing antidote to the often overly structured, set-piece heavy, and tactically suffocating nature of modern Premier League football.

Cherki has become a pivotal cog in City’s late-season surge, a momentum that will be supercharged should they overcome the increasingly fragile league leaders at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

Until recently, Cherki’s most memorable moment was an audacious rabona cross that set up Phil Foden during a league victory over Sunderland in December. However, his flair for the dramatic and his penchant for showboating have since reached new heights.

Fans will recall his mid-match keepy-uppies during the Carabao Cup final win against Arsenal at Wembley last month.

There was also the curious incident after a brilliant display in an FA Cup thrashing of Liverpool in early April, where he swapped shirts with Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike and briefly sat among City’s substitutes wearing an opponent’s uniform in the final minutes.

Most recently, during an injury delay in the 3-0 win at Chelsea, he was observed casually flipping a water bottle onto the painted touchline while his teammates received tactical instructions from manager Pep Guardiola.

These aren’t acts of disrespect, it seems, but simply Cherki being Cherki. And for Guardiola, a manager synonymous with serial trophy success, it has certainly required some adjustment.

Guardiola has lauded the 22-year-old, describing him as “one of the most unbelievably talented players I’ve ever seen.”

Cherki’s arrival from Lyon in June for a fee of 36 million euros (£31 million) now feels like an undeniable bargain. Yet, the City manager has often struggled to conceal his displeasure with some of Cherki’s more unconventional antics.

Following that memorable rabona assist, Guardiola publicly urged Cherki to emulate the simplicity of Lionel Messi, a player he famously helped mould into the world’s greatest. Witnessing Cherki’s juggling routine during the League Cup final, Guardiola stood with arms outstretched, shaking his head in clear disapproval.

The manager consistently demands more from Cherki, imploring him to maintain a closer proximity to sole striker Erling Haaland rather than drifting across the field or dropping too deep in search of the ball.

Despite these occasional frustrations, nearly a full season into Cherki’s tenure at City, Guardiola cannot help but be impressed by his displays and the remarkable statistics he is accumulating.

This consistent output has solidified his place as a regular starter for the club and could even secure him a spot in France’s starting line-up for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His two assists against Chelsea last weekend brought Cherki’s tally to nine open-play assists in the league, a figure unmatched by any other player.

Equally adept with both feet, he has injected a crucial cutting edge into City’s build-up play that had been noticeably absent until recently. Indeed, Cherki is increasingly being viewed as the ideal successor to the departed Kevin De Bruyne, despite their distinct playing styles.

While De Bruyne captivated fans with his exquisite range of passing, Cherki’s spontaneous trickery now elicits similar gasps of admiration. His cheeky, lovable character further endears him to the supporters.

Guardiola himself could only laugh after being playfully shoved hard in the back at the final whistle of the Carabao Cup final, turning to find the mischievous push had come from Cherki as he ran onto the pitch to celebrate.

“In the difficult moments and under pressure, he acts like it’s a friendly game. That it doesn’t matter,” Guardiola observed. “And that’s so difficult to find.”
