The investigation into the shooting spree allegedly unleashed by three teenagers across Austin, Texas, over the weekend has uncovered fresh details about the timeline of events and the suspects.
Three people were struck by bullets and one person was injured by shattered glass after at least two suspects fired into five vehicles, two fire stations, and at least four homes, in 12 separate incidents over two days, according to Austin Police Department. A victim who was shot in the back and stomach was transported to hospital and is in critical condition.
On Monday, police released the mugshot of the oldest suspect, 17-year-old Cristian Fajardo Mondragon. Two additional suspects, ages 15 and 16, were not publicly identified because they are juveniles.
Mondragon and the 15-year-old suspect were taken into custody after being pulled over in a stolen car and attempting to run, police said. The 16-year-old suspect, who was also in the vehicle but fled on foot, was detained Sunday night at a gas station in Manor, about 15 miles northeast of Austin.
All three suspects are expected to face multiple charges, police said, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest and theft of a firearm. Investigators said additional charges could be filed as detectives continue reviewing evidence.
Police released a timeline Monday that revealed new details of how the violent weekend played out.
In total, investigators said the shootings damaged five vehicles, four homes, two fire stations and three fire department vehicles. Authorities also said at least five vehicles and one firearm were stolen during the crime spree.
Investigators believe the incidents were a mix of random and targeted shootings. Some victims were known to the suspects, while others appear to have no known connection.
Police credited license plate reader technology with helping officers locate the suspects. “At this stage of the investigation, APD is aware of the contribution of license plate reader (LPR) technology to the apprehension of the suspects in Manor,” police said in a press release.
After receiving an alert, police pursued the vehicle and when they attempted to pull it over, three suspects fled from the car on foot. Two suspects were captured within about 30 minutes, while officers spent hours searching for the third.
Nearly 200 officers from multiple agencies, including SWAT teams, K-9 units and air support, joined the search effort, police said, as several surrounding neighborhoods were placed under a shelter-in-place order. The order has since been lifted.
Police said the final suspect was arrested shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday at the H-E-B gas station on FM 973 after officers responded to reports of a suspicious person. Authorities are continuing to process evidence, including shell casings, surveillance footage, stolen vehicles and digital evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
