People 1st International in collaboration with The Hospitality and Tourism Skills Network (HATS), Tourism Northern Ireland (TNI), the Northern Ireland Hotels Federation (NIHF), the NI Tourism Alliance (NITA) and Ulster University, are researching to examine the barriers experienced by organisations in Northern Ireland’s Tourism and Hospitality sectors when seeking to fill their skills and labour requirements.

Employers or people who work in recruitment in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
What is the aim of the research?
The aim of this research is to explore the challenges hospitality and tourism sector employers face in recruiting and retaining talent from diverse and underrepresented groups who are most likely to be economically inactive or unemployed, which may include
- individuals with disabilities
- people with caring responsibilities
- older individuals
- young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
- those lacking qualifications or with substantial employment gaps
- ethnic minorities and migrant workers
- LGBTQ+ individuals
- women (situationally, in specific subsectors)
This work will inform policy recommendations towards improving the quality of government support towards helping employers address skills gaps and improve the inclusivity of their workforce.
