Community’s promise of “six seasons and a movie” might seem like it’s not coming true despite being officially announced, but Donald Glover is assuring fans it wasn’t a lie.
It’s been more than three years since a film continuation of the NBC sitcom, which ran from 2009 to 2015, was confirmed to be happening with the show’s main cast, including Glover, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs and Danny Pudi.
At the time of the announcement, Alison Brie, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong were also confirmed to return, and Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown shared their involvement in the following months. Chevy Chase is not attached.
However, scheduling conflicts have prevented the film from proceeding, leading fans to wonder if they’ll ever see the characters – a group of adult students at a Colorado community college – ever again.
According to Glover, who played Troy in the sitcom, “we’re working on it right now”.
The Atlanta star and Childish Gambino rapper, who is promoting new film The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, told Entertainment Tonight: “I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think that something is gonna happen soon.”
He said his fellow cast members are on a text chain, where they will excitedly “talk about” the project, which is being made by US streaming service Peacock.
McHale, who played Jeff Winger, provided an update on the film in March 2025, telling podcast Dinner’s On Me: “Well, we got the money, which is one of the harder things to do. And everyone’s in.
“It’s really coming down to schedules and a script was written. So all that is real. And I know that we have been talking about it for literally years, but it will happen. It’s just getting those schedules together.”

Community creator Dan Harmon is co-writing the film with Andrew Guest, who wrote the fan-favourite episode “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons”.
According to a press release, “the TV series that predicted its own movie” will be returning with “the least predictable movie of a TV series that referenced a lot of movies and TV”.
In a statement, NBC Universal Television’s chairman of entertainment Susan Rovner said: “‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from Community‘s early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious and cool (cool, cool) NBC comedy.
“We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences.”
